A New Record

For the third time in seven days, the NCAA women’s basketball tournament drew its largest audience ever. Some 18.87 million people watched South Carolina cap an undefeated season by beating Iowa, 87-75, in April 7’s championship game, according to Nielsen ratings. The audience is the largest ever for a women’s basketball game in the United States — and among the biggest for any women’s team sporting event. Sunday’s broadcast on ABC and ESPN is the third record-setter for women’s basketball in the past week.

What’s On Apple TV+ Now

As Apple TV+ has built up its catalog of original series, it has burnished its brand as the home of prestige dramas, including new originals Masters of the Air and Manhunt. Drama comprises nearly 35 percent of the platform’s current programming, per Luminate’s tally. The streamer, part of Apple’s services division, broke out with the global success of Ted Lasso, won a best picture Oscar with CODA and is the current home to Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. 2024 Preview.

How “Peak TV” Peaked

The output of TV premieres (both streaming and linear) last year even lags behind the pandemic year of 2020, which still saw just under 2,000 season and series debuts, per a tally from Luminate. The numbers paint a pretty stark picture of just how much the TV world shrank. Comedies and dramas saw the steepest declines, with the former having 30 percent fewer premieres (134 vs. 192) than in 2022 and dramas falling off by about 25 percent (381 vs. 510).
