Mikey O'Connell

TV Features Editor

Mikey O'Connell is the TV Features Editor at The Hollywood Reporter, where he's held several positions since joining the magazine in 2011. Though his primary focus is covering the television industry, he frequently explores culture and film — writing and reporting features, news, interviews and profiles, as well as overseeing many annual editorial packages such as the Hollywood's 50 Most Powerful Showrunners issue. Mikey also manages weekly Q&A franchise Creative Space and wonders how many days will pass before his parents notice this new bio. (He'll report back on that.)

Alex Edelman Knows There’s Power in the Third Rail

Alex Edelman’s go-to order at Barney Greengrass is whitefish on an everything bagel with a side of scrambled eggs. The Upper West Side institution isn’t exactly his local haunt — he lives out of a blue Samsonite bag these days — but this New York deli is a magnet for the Boston-born comic. “It’s where […]

Let Kristen Kish Ease You Into the New Era of ‘Top Chef’

Wednesday’s season 21 premiere of Top Chef is a hard reset in a number of ways, most obvious among them being the new host. For the first time in 19 seasons and just as many years, it isn’t Padma Lakshmi gently but decisively telling an unlucky hopeful to pack their knives and go. It’s Kristen […]

Tig Notaro Still Isn’t Sure How She Got Here

Tig Notaro has never had to tell the same jokes for so long, but her latest comedy special, Hello Again, arrives March 26 on Prime Video — well over four years after she first started touring the material. “My God, it just would not end,” says Notaro. “I couldn’t wait to be home with my family, […]

Comedian Bassem Youssef on the Risk of Alienating Everyone

This April marks the 10-year anniversary of Bassem Youssef’s final telecast of Al Bernameg. At its apex, the Egyptian satirical news show drew 40 million viewers and prompted comparisons between its host/co-creator and Jon Stewart before ultimately proving too controversial to remain on the air — or for Youssef and his family to safely remain […]

Of Course Keke Palmer Isn’t Retiring Anytime Soon

Keke Palmer is not sleeping on 2024. Starting the year with an Emmy win for outstanding host of a game show for her work on NBC’s Password, the actress is filming both Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune and Eddie Murphy vehicle The Pickup, running year-old media upstart KeyTV, growing her podcast and hosting a second season […]

Where to Put Your Oscar? Feng Shui Experts Have (Strong) Opinions

As Hollywood legend or, rather, a recycled talk show anecdote tells us, Kate Winslet keeps her best actress Academy Award for 2008’s The Reader in a guest bathroom. This location allows visitors some private time with Oscar — a chance to hold him, gaze in the mirror, maybe mouth the acceptance speech they’ll likely never […]

Messi the Dog, ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Star and New Hollywood Darling, Expected to Miss Oscars

Devastating news for fans of canine cameos: Messi, the scene-stealing border collie from best picture nominee Anatomy of a Fall and unlikely star of the 2024 Oscar campaign season, will not return to Los Angeles for Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony.  Though reps for the Academy did not comment, a source at the Neon-distributed film says […]

THR’s Awards Season Superlatives: The Good, the Bad and the Bathwater

Most Social Capital Lost in 10 Minutes: Jo Koy Proverbial gun to head, few awards show aficionados could name a more embarrassing monologue than Jo Koy’s turn at the 2024 Golden Globes — a slow-motion car wreck that will live in infamy for the crickets and cringes he drew from his A-list audience. Fellow comics have […]

The Oscar Producers Really Want to Remind You About That Early Start Time

The 2024 Academy Awards have two timing concerns. For one, the show is airing an hour earlier than its historic slot — kicking off at 7 p.m. ET and 4 p.m. on the West Coast. ABC’s March 10 live telecast also coincides with the “spring forward” of the first day of Daylight Savings, further confusing matters […]

And the Oscar Goes to… Pigs in a Blanket

Glad-handing is a competitive sport, one that’s all but impossible to win with both paws buried in a seafood tower. Such is the eternal conundrum of the awards season party circuit. These are celebrations, sure, yet the pressure to network, posture and kiss any proverbial ring that may be offered so often undermines that most […]

Chelsea Peretti Has Enough on Her Plate

Breakfast at Little Dom’s is doing nothing to assuage Chelsea Peretti’s current frustration with Los Angeles. We’re discussing how inescapable the entertainment industry can be in a booth branded with a dedicatory plaque to Jon Hamm. One table over, Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao is taking a meeting and, on the other side of the window, […]
